Why You Need To Care

Even with Larry Brown’s suspension, the Mustangs have found a way to stay unbeaten at 7-0. SMU has averaged 81.9 points per game during its winning streak, and the latest victory came at home against Michigan last week.

The Mustangs held the Wolverines to 35 percent shooting from the field and out-rebounded them 42-20.

For the Colonels, it’s been bit of a rough patch — to say the least. Nicholls State began its season with a loss to Florida State. Since then, its only three wins have come against Mobile, Louisiana College and Loyola (LA).

The last time out ended with the Colonels picking up their second straight loss, as North Texas smacked Nicholls State 78-60.

Why SMU Will Win

Nic Moore has been huge for the Mustangs so far. He’s shooting 42.4 percent from the field and 45.7 percent from three while averaging 15 points per game. He’ll need to create for himself in order to set up some open looks for Keith Frazier, who’s shooting 36.4 percent from behind the arc. On the flip side, SMU only allows its opponents to shoot 32 percent from three, and the Colonels only hit 28 percent of their triples. So, if the Mustangs force Nicholls State to win the game from the outside, it should easily go SMU’s way.

Why Nicholls State Will Win

Moore is leading SMU in scoring, but he’s not a volume shooter by any means. The Colonels should dial in on him and force Frazier to step up and carry the load offensively. Nicholls State will have to crash the boards against the Mustangs, who have allowed the least amount of rebounds in the nation (189). Ja’Dante’ Frye and T.J. Carpenter will have to be efficient in scoring the ball. Carpenter is shooting 35.1 percent to Frye’s 50 percent shooting. If they’re lights out and also crash the boards, the Colonels will make it close.

What’s Going To Happen?

Moore is going to have a field day. He’ll get what he wants on the offensive end, and Frazier will tag team the three-point shooting with him. Nicholls State will get a valiant effort from Frye, but that’ll be it. Carpenter won’t be efficient enough from behind the arc to make that much of a splash. SMU should control the glass. The Colonels aren’t a good rebounding team to begin with, so the Mustangs should lock down the glass and carry out a win.
