    Former Southern Illinois basketball player Bryan Mullins will become a first-time Division I head coach at his alma mater, replacing Barry Hinson, after inking a five-year contract with the university on March 20.

    Stadium obtained the contract via public records request and we’re here to provide the details.

    Mullins, who was previously an assistant at Loyola Chicago, signed a five-year contract with Southern Illinois that runs from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2024.

    An automatic one-year contract extension kicked in roughy six months after Mullins was hired after Southern Illinois Athletic Director Jerry Kill accepted a position with Virginia Tech’s football program.

    Mullins’ contract now runs through the 2025 season.

    Mullins will receive an annual base salary of $475,000 with numerous incentives that are outlined below:

    • $10,000 – If Southern Illinois has a single-year APR score of 1,000 or greater.
    • $10,000 – If the team’s overall GPA is 2.8 or greater for the academic year.
      • $5,000 – (Additional) if the team’s overall GPA is 3.0 or greater for the academic year.
    • $10,000 – If Southern Illinois wins 20 or more games in the regular season/postseason.
      • $10,000 – (Additional) if the team wins 25 or more games in the regular season/postseason.
    • $10,000 – If Southern Illinois wins at least a share of the Missouri Valley regular season championship.
    • $20,000 – If Southern Illinois wins the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and/or earns an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
    • $10,000 – If Southern Illinois wins a game in the First Four.
    • $15,000 – If Southern Illinois wins a game in the round of 64.
    • $25,000 – If Southern Illinois wins a game in the round of 32.
    • $50,000 – If Southern Illinois wins a game in the Sweet 16.
    • $75,000 – If Southern Illinois wins a game in the Elite Eight.
    • $100,000 – If Southern Illinois wins a game in the Final Four.
    • $200,000 – If Southern Illinois wins the national championship.
    • $3,500 – If Southern Illinois receives and accepts a bid to the NIT.
    • $3,500 – For every game Southern Illinois plays in the NIT prior to the Final Four.
    • $15,000 – If Southern Illinois wins the NIT.
    • $10,000 – If Bryan Mullins wins MVC Coach of the Year.
    • $25,000 – If Bryan Mullins wins National Coach of the Year.
    • $15,000 – If Southern Illinois’ home attendance exceeds an average of 6,000 fans.
    • $5,000 – If a home game at Southern Illinois sells out.

     

    Mullins’ assistant coach salary pool is $360,000 annually for three assistant coaches.

    Mullins’ contract can’t be terminated until after March 31, 2021.

    If Mullins’ contract is terminated, he’ll receive $225,000 in severance, which is the equivalent of 22 weeks of salary, benefits and perks owed to him under the terms of the contract, as well as liquidated damages in the amount listed below:

    • $425,000 – If Mullins is fired after March 31, 2021 but before April 1, 2022.
    • $275,000 – If Mullins is fired after March 31, 2022 but before April 1, 2023.
    • $25,000 – If Mullins is fired after March 31, 2023 but before the end of the contract.

     

    If Mullins terminates his contract early, he’ll owe the university $125,000 for each year, or partial year, remaining in his contract.
