Southern Miss earned a moral victory Saturday versus heavily-favored Mississippi State, fading down the stretch of a closer-than-expected 34-16 loss. It was the kind of effort head coach Todd Monken hopes to build off, beginning this weekend against Austin Peay. Mercer routed the Governors in their opener, 28-7.
The Governors want to give QB Trey Taylor chances to beat a vulnerable Golden Eagle D, with help from WR Jared Beard. The pair connected seven times last week for 85 yards and the team’s only score of the day.
Monken took a lot of positives out of his team’s effort with a quality SEC opponent. QB Nick Mullens and RB Ito Smith showed flashed on offense, while the beleaguered D kept Dak Prescott from taking the game over. No W, but hanging with Mississippi State will give USM a confidence injection.
Now that Mullens has beaten out TCU transfer Tyler Matthews in a heated battle, he must keep growing for Southern Miss to evolve as well. Mullens’ set of hands is on the uptick as well, with redshirt freshman Korey Robertson prepared to complement vets Mike Thomas, Casey Martin and D.J. Thompson.
Southern Miss might be gradually turning the corner, based on its first game. Against a far weaker opponent this week, the Golden Eagles will continue in the right direction, reveling in the opportunity to play the favorite role for a change.
And the Southern Miss vs. Austin Peay prediction is …
