Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson will retire after this academic year, a source told Stadium.

The official announcement will be made on Thursday, a source said.

Benson, who turns 67 in December, has been the Sun Belt’s commissioner since 2012. Previously, he was commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference from 1994-2002 and the Mid-American Conference from 1990-94.

Benson’s retirement was first reported by The Lafayette (La.) Daily Advertiser.
