The No. 10 seeded Syracuse Orange will battle the No. 11 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs in the second regional semifinal on Friday in Chicago.
The Orange (21-13) are back in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2013 after blowing out the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 75-50, sending the tournament darlings home on Sunday. Syracuse was lights out from the field connecting on 55.1 percent of its field goals and shot a modest 40 percent from downtown. Meanwhile, it’s defense came to play as well, holding Middle Tennessee to 29.7 percent from the field. After a down game vs. Dayton, Michael Gbinije exploded for 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting to lead the Orange.
The Bulldogs (28-7) beat down the No. 3 seeded Utah Utes 82-59 in Denver on Saturday. The win marked back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances for Gonzaga and it’s fourth as a double-digit seed, the most ever. The Zags could not be stopped on the glass (plus-10) or from the field, shooting 47.4 percent from three and 55.7 percent from the field. Four of the five Gonzaga starters finished in double-figures, but Eric McClellan who led the team with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor.

The Zags have been red hot in postseason play, and a lot of that has to do with their discipline defensively. Gonzaga will disrupt what Syracuse wants to do on the offensive end of the floor and capitalize on their mistakes.
