Texas State vs. Incarnate Word Game Preview
When: Saturday, October 1 – 7:30 p.m. ET
Where: Bobcat Stadium, San Marcos, Tex.
A visit from a Southland Conference also-ran couldn’t come at a better time for Texas State. After starting 2016 with a wild triple-overtime victory at Ohio, the Bobcats have been humbled in consecutive games by Arkansas and Houston. In fact, they haven’t reached the end zone in almost a month. Facing Incarnate Word affords Everett Withers a chance to clear the cobwebs and get his team turned around before the start of Sun Belt play a week later. The Cardinals have performed better than their 1-3 mark. Their losses have been by an average of just eight points, including last week’s rally to put a scare into McNeese State.
What To Know About Texas State
The Bobcats have struggled against superior competition. Fortunately, the schedule is about to soften considerably. This is Withers’ first season in San Marcos, taking over a team that disappointingly went 3-9 in 2015. The key for Texas State this week will be to unleash quarterback Tyler Jones and wideout Elijah King, the team’s two best playmakers. Jones, in particular, is a gutsy playmaker who can move the chains with his arm and his feet. In the opener at Ohio, he accounted for 429 yards and three scores, with two of his touchdown throws going to King.
What To Know About Incarnate Word
As recently as 2012, the Cardinals were a Division II program, and it has shown in their struggles at the FCS level. The defense is a liability and the running game is sporadic, so the team will only go as far as quarterback Trent Brittain can take it. The junior has thrown for eight scores and 917 yards through four games, and he has three quality targets in wide receivers Jamari Gilbert and Jordan Hicks and running back Dorland Fields. Brittain plans to attack a Texas State defense that’s allowed 160 points in three games.
Offense: Texas State. Jones will be the best player at Bobcat Stadium, especially since he’ll get more time than usual.
Defense: Texas State. The Bobcats recruit FBS defenders, the Cardinals do not. Still, both of these units are rotten.
Special Teams: Texas State. Lumi Kaba has the strongest leg in this one, both as a punter and a kickoff specialist.
Coaching: Texas State. Withers came to the Bobcats following a successful stint at FCS James Madison.
Intangibles: Texas State. After being shoved around by Arkansas and Houston, Texas State eager to play the role of bully for a change.
Matchup To Watch
King vs. the Incarnate Word secondary
Texas State really wants to get King rolling again after superior defenders silenced him the past two games. He ought to rebound in a hurry in the face of an Incarnate Word secondary allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete nearly two-thirds of their passes.

Texas State vs. Incarnate Word Prediction
After getting shellacked in consecutive games, there’s no chance Texas State will look past a weaker opponent from a lower level. The Bobcats will be motivated throughout, attacking Incarnate Word with Jones’ dual-threat repertoire. The junior quarterback will account for four touchdowns to offset a defense that’ll continue taking its lumps in October and November. Texas State evens its record with a convincing win over an eager—yet undermanned—visitor from nearby San Antonio.
Texas State vs. Incarnate Word Score Prediction: Texas State 45, Incarnate Word 24
