Texas vs. UTEP Game Preview

When: Saturday, Sept. 10 – 7 p.m. ET

Where: Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin, Texas
Broadcast: Longhorn Network
Charlie Strong’s seat is a bit cooler following Texas’ huge victory over Notre Dame. The Longhorns jumped into the AP Top 25 for the first time during Strong’s tenure, going from unranked to No. 11 after beating the Fighting Irish 50-47 in double overtime on national television. It’s an accomplishment, indeed, but can Texas continue the momentum?
UTEP is next up as it tries to prevent Texas from starting 2-0 for the first time since 2012. The Miners are ready and willing to engage in a shootout much like the Longhorns did with the Irish last weekend.

What To Know About Texas

There’s an old adage: “If you have two quarterbacks, you don’t have any.” Well, forget that nonsense. True freshman Shane Buechele threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns, then senior Tyrone Swoopes rushed for 53 yards and three scores, including the winner after Notre Dame kicked a field goal to start the second OT. Swoopes’ effort complemented D’Onta Foreman’s 131-yard day on the ground as the Longhorns finished with 517 total yards.

What to Know About UTEP

UTEP finished with one more yard of offense than Texas last weekend, and it did it without the benefit of multiple overtimes. The Miners beat New Mexico State 38-22 while going 11 for 17 on third down. It was a balanced effort, but the guy to watch is running back Aaron Jones. He ran 31 times for 249 yards and two touchdowns, including a 75-yarder in the fourth that put the game out of reach.

Advantages

Offense: Texas – Both teams put up solid first efforts, but Texas’ came against a tough Notre Dame team.

Defense:  Texas – The Longhorns hold the edge talent-wise, but they’ll have to be better after giving up 444 yards to the Irish.
Special Teams: Even – Texas might not have even needed overtime if it wasn’t for that blocked extra point that Notre Dame returned for two to tie it up.
Coaching: Texas – There’s no doubt Strong is a good coach. It just now seems to be coming together at Texas.
Intangibles: Texas – The Longhorns have plenty of confidence following that crazy victory.

Matchup To Watch

Texas vs. A potential letdown

The win over Notre Dame and the manner in which it happened put the Longhorns in the national spotlight – this time for reasons other than Strong’s job status. They’ll have to move past it quickly and use it as momentum for this week.
