The No. 20 Toledo Rockets will play host to the Northern Illinois Huskies on Tuesday night in a MAC West division showdown.

The Rockets (7-0, 4-0 MAC) have been one of the few surprise undefeated programs out of the Group of Five and have won their past 10 games dating back to last season. Toledo got much needed rest during last week’s bye after looking tired in the first half of their 51-35 win over UMASS a couple weeks ago. The Rockets faced a 28-10 deficit at halftime, only to turn up the heat on the Minutemen and explode for 41 second-half points. After a poor first half that included a trio of interceptions, Philip Ely (26-of-47, 355 yards) bounced back in a big way for Toledo throwing five touchdowns in the second half — a career best and third-most in school history. The backfield dubbed the “Justice League” combined for 265 total yards on the ground, with Terry Swanson, the MAC’s leading rusher, accounting for a game-high 118 yards and a score.

The Huskies (5-3, 3-1 MAC) have responded to losing three-straight by winning their last three games. Northern Illinois took its newfound confidence into the bye week after defeating Eastern Michigan 49-21 last time out. Drew Hare turned in an impressive performance for the Huskies, hitting on 24 of his 38 pass attempts for 267 yards and four touchdowns. The NIU rushing was also humming, churning out 323 yards on the day, with Joel Bouagnon (26 car, 137 yards, TD) and Jordan Huff (13 car, 128 yards, TD) leading the charge. The effort marked the second straight game where the Huskies rushed for 300+ yards and fourth straight rushing for 200+ yards.

Toledo and Northern Illinois will meet for the 43rd time, with the Rockets holding the 29-13 advantage in the all-time series. However, the Huskies have dominated recently winning six of the last seven matchups.

Both teams aren’t strangers when it comes to weeknight MACtion. Since 2010, Toledo and NIU have played in 15 midweek MAC games, respectively, the most by any MAC team. The Rockets and Huskies have met on either a Tuesday (three times) or Wednesday (twice) in each of the last five seasons.

Prediction

It’s Northern Illinois – it knows how to hang around in tough games and it knows how to win the games it absolutely needs to. But it’s Toledo’s time. The Rockets don’t have the consistent running game expected, but Ely is hot and the offense is rolling. Expect the offenses to play at a high level, but for the Rockets to do just a little more in the fourth.
