Report: Tom Herman Is High On South Carolina’s Coaching List

Tom Herman is reportedly very high on South Carolina's list. ESPN's Chris Low reports the Gamecocks have "major interest."

*UPDATE* Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports reports that Tom Herman has removed himself from the South Carolina coaching search.

With the regular season winding down, the coaching carousel is starting to pick up speed.

One of the top jobs on the open market is South Carolina. The Gamecocks have the financial backing, alumni support, location and conference affiliation that makes it a very desirable destination. Former head coach Steve Spurrier changed the culture of the program, turning the Gamecocks into SEC East contenders, before he retired earlier this season.

One of the coaches high on South Carolina’s list is Houston head coach Tom Herman, according to ESPN’s Chris Low.

“South Carolina has major interest in Tom Herman, but after checking with some close to the situation, I’d be surprised if he ends up there.”

“You never say never with Herman and South Carolina, but I’m told he’s more inclined to stay put at Houston or go elsewhere.”

To be fair, Herman is high on just about everyone’s list due to the success he’s had in his first year as a head coach.

As of writing, the Cougars are 10-1 and ranked No. 21 in the nation. They are second in the American East, but have a chance to knock off first-place Navy this coming Friday.

If South Carolina, or another school, is going to pluck Herman away from Houston, the Gamecocks are going to have to pony up with the offer. Houston’s Board of Regents just recently approved an annual salary increase from $1.3 to $3 million, and it’s ready to dig deeper into its pockets if need be.
