Top 25 college baseball rankings following the second weekend of play. Five teams ranked in the Baseball America College Top 25 are currently undefeated.
Now two weeks into the season, there are five teams in the Baseball America top 25 rankings without a checkmark in the loss column. Louisville, Virginia, North Carolina, Arizona, and Ole Miss remain undefeated heading into the third week of the 2017 baseball season, with three of those teams residing in the ACC.
Ole Miss, who began the season unranked in Baseball America’s Top 25 rankings, is now 7-0 after a weekend sweep of UNC-Wilmington. The Rebels now find themselves sitting at No. 20 in this week’s rankings. Along with Ole Miss, five other SEC teams find themselves in the top 25, with Texas A&M being the newest member. The Aggies (6-1) are the only new addition to this week’s rankings, taking the place of last week’s No. 25 Wright State. Even with six teams now ranked the SEC still trails the ACC, who leads the nation with seven ranked teams.
The top eight ranked teams remain unchanged this week, with TCU still sitting atop college baseball with a 6-1 record.
A few notable performers from the past week were Jared Poché (LSU), Ricky Thomas (Fresno State), Gavin Sheets (Wake Forest), and Brent Rooker (Miss. State).
Poché, who came into Saturday’s start fresh off of throwing LSU’s first no-hitter since 1979 a week earlier, almost made it back-to-back no-no’s. Poché did not allow a hit through 8 innings Saturday against Maryland before allowing a hit with no outs in the ninth. He finished with a line of 8 innings pitched, 6 strikeouts, and 2 walks. He has yet to allow a run this season.
Ricky Thomas of Fresno State turned in a gem as well this weekend, as he pitched 7 innings while allowing just 1 hit and striking out 15 in Friday night’s contest against UC Riverside. Fresno State as a team struck out 29 batters in the game (18 innings), which is tied for the second most in NCAA history.
Wake Forest first baseman Gavin Sheets tied two school records in Friday’s win over Southern California by jacking 3 home runs in the game to go along with 9 runs batted in. The Deacons won the game 15-5.
In an effort to match Sheets, Mississippi State’s Brent Rooker blasted 2 home runs and drove in 8 during Friday’s contest against Indiana State.
