There’s a void with the top returning ACC tight ends for 2017, as many of the conference’s best TEs have moved on.

An ACC alum, Miami’s David Njoku, could be the first tight end selected in the 2017 NFL Draft. Virginia Tech’s Bucky Hodges, Clemson’s Jordan Leggett and Louisville’s Cole Hikutini will have a chance to play on Sundays as well. No, the ACC won’t be nearly as dangerous at tight end this season, though NC State’s multidimensional Jaylen Samuels is willing to do anything within his power to pick up the slack this fall.

    3. Christopher Herndon IV, Miami

The Canes boasted arguably the nation’s best tight end tandem of 2016. But now that David Njoku is wowing NFL scouts, Herndon will get his chance to flourish in an expanded role. While not as explosive as Njoku, he might actually be more versatile, contributing as both a receiver and an assertive blocker. The 6-4, 253-pound Herndon is eyeing an uptick in last year’s numbers, 28 receptions for 334 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

    2. Cam Serigne, Wake Forest

In the conservative, methodical Demon Deacon offense, Serigne is an especially important component for moving the chains. Through three seasons in Winston-Salem, he’s caught 130 passes for 1,519 yards and a dozen touchdowns. However, his production has been flat since starting fast as a rookie in 2014. Serigne can be counted on in the passing game, but as his touches have decreased he’s worked on becoming a more effective blocker.

    1. Jaylen Samuels, NC State

Versatility is not a term typically associated with tight ends, but Samuels is atypical of most players at his position. He does so many things well for the Pack, who’ve willingly accommodated his need for job diversity. Last year alone, Samuels accounted for 14 touchdowns, seven as a receiver, six as a quasi-fullback and one on a pass. He’s a weekly producer, with an innate ability for finding the soft areas of a defense.
