Troy at Idaho Game Preview

When: Saturday, October 1 – 5:00 p.m. ET
Where: Kibbie Dome, Moscow, ID
Broadcast: None

Troy has been one of this season’s early surprises out of the Sun Belt Conference. The Trojans’ 3-1 start includes an upset of Southern Miss and a six-point loss to then-No. 2 Clemson in Death Valley. Last Saturday, they began the league schedule with an end-to-end rout of New Mexico State highlighted by five interceptions. Troy hopes to continue rolling against Idaho, which is back in Moscow for the first time in a month. The Vandals head home with an unusual amount of confidence after upsetting UNLV for their first non-conference road victory in almost six years.

What To Know About Troy

The Trojans are doing a lot of things well in 2016, which makes them a threat for league contention. Quarterback Brandon Silvers and running back Jordan Chunn headline an offense that leads the league at 42.5 points and 473 yards per game. However, they’ve also been opportunistic on defense, picking off 10 passes and stiffening at key moments, such as on third downs and in the red zone. Troy notched 11 stops for loss against New Mexico State, an indication of the defense’s range and penchant for flying to the ball.

What To Know About Idaho

The Vandals have two September wins for the first time since 2010, signs of progress under fourth-year coach Paul Petrino. They were outclassed by Washington and Wazzu, which was expected. In the UNLV upset, though, contributions came from veteran quarterback Matt Linehan, running back Aaron Duckworth and a weak defense that bent often, yet forced field goals and came up big on third downs. Linebackers Ed Hall, Tony Lashley and Kaden Elliss are working hard to keep opponents from getting into the secondary.

Offense: Troy. Explosive plays have been scarce, but Brown has the Trojans operating at a high efficiency.

Defense: Troy. Only Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt is allowing fewer yards per play than the Trojans.

Special Teams: Idaho. Austin Rehkow is one of college football’s premier punter, as well as a pretty good placekicker.

Coaching: Troy. Brown has a future at a Power Five school, while coordinator Vic Koenning is a seasoned teacher of defenses.

Intangibles: Idaho. Back home for the first time in a month, the Vandals have a rare case of confidence following the Week 3 win in Las Vegas.

Matchup To Watch

Chunn vs. the Idaho linebackers

The Vandals can focus on slowing down Silvers or Chunn, but they’re unlikely to derail both members of the Trojan backfield. Chunn is a powerful workhorse, with the leg drive and the power between the tackles to wear down Idaho and set up Silvers on play-action.

Troy at Idaho Prediction

The Trojans are on the kind of roll that won’t be stopped by Idaho. True, the Vandals are coming off an important road victory, which should provide a rare confidence boost. And this is a long trip for Troy. But Idaho lacks the defensive stoppers to sidetrack a Trojan attack that’s playing so well for Brown. Silvers and Chunn will keep the chains moving, while Koenning’s defense continues to flip the field and stall drives with takeaways.

Troy at Idaho Score Prediction: Troy 42, Idaho 23
