Maine and Tulane meet for the first, with the Black Bears receiving $325,000 for making the trip to Yulman Stadium. For the Green Wave, which is 12-0 all-time versus FCS schools, this game couldn’t come at a better time. The program has lost its first two games to Duke and Georgia Tech by a combined score of 102-17. Maine, meanwhile, had a week off after losing to Boston College, 24-3.
The Black Bear defense has potential now that veterans Christophe Mulumba Tshimanga, Trevor Bates and Mike Kozlakowski are back to anchor the front seven. Maine did a solid job of managing Boston College, which has more talent than a Tulane attack struggling badly to run the ball or convert third downs.
At long last, Tulane, an offense you can manage. After being trucked by ACC teams, the Green Wave gets to face a CAA opponent. It’ll finally have more success at the point of attack, where Tanzel Smart, Royce LaFrance and Corey Redwine man the D-line. And with time, QB Tanner Lee will connect with emerging WR Devon Breaux.
Tulane began the year with a loaded backfield. But after two games, it’s averaging less than two yards a carry. The O-line, which has been whipped for eight quarters, needs to open holes for Lazedrick Thompson and Sherman Badie to help make life a little easier on Lee.
Man-for-man, Tulane is deeper and more skilled than Maine, even if it hasn’t shown in the first half of September. The Green Wave will delight at the chance to be the favorite for a change, playing inspired on both sides of the ball to escape the Black Bears.
Final Score: Tulane 28, Maine 17, Line: No Line, o/u: No Line
