UCF vs. UConn Game Preview

When: Saturday, October 22 – 12:00 p.m. ET
Where: Rentschler Field, East Hartford, CT
TV Broadcast: ESPNEWS

UCF is coming off a tough 26-25 loss to Temple this past Saturday, as the Knights fell to 3-3 on the season. For a team that won zero games last year, this season has already been a success, and with Scott Frost in charge, good things are ahead in Orlando.

The Huskies suffered a 42-27 defeat at the hands of South Florida to drop to 3-4. Quarterback Bryant Shirreffs continues to provide most of the offense for UConn, combining for nine total touchdowns.

What To Know About UCF

UCF is 33rd in the nation in rushing offense, gaining 207.67 yards per game, but were shut down in the loss to Temple (86 yards). That didn’t help freshman quarterback McKenzie Milton, who was sacked seven times in the loss. To move the ball, the Knights must get some offensive balance again.

The Knights aren’t easy to move the ball against, giving up only 352.8 yards per game. Stopping Shirreffs should be priority No. 1 for UCF.

What to Know About UConn

As said before, the Huskies depend on Shirreffs, and that can be a problem. Without his 231 rushing yards, UConn has gained only 659 total rushing yards this season. The majority of those belong to Arkeel Newsome, who must become a bigger threat.

The Huskies defense is stout against the run, giving up only 129.86 yards per game. They will be challenged though against a UCF team that loves to run the ball.

Offense: UCF. The ground game must get going again for the Knights to be productive.

Defense: Tie. Both are greedy with yards.

Special Teams: UConn. Kicker Bobby Puyol is 9-for-10 on field goal attempts.

Coaching: UCF. Frost will be coaching at a major program soon.

Intangibles: UCF. The Knights still have a chance at winning the AAC East.

UCF vs. UConn Prediction

Was the lack of a rushing game just a one-time thing for UCF or will it continue against the Huskies? The Knights must give quarterback McKenzie Milton a chance to show what he can do without the opponent’s pinning their ears back due to no pass rush. If UConn can shut down the run, they will win. I expect that won’t happen, as UCF keeps itself in the AAC East race with a close win.
