The UConn Huskies will take on the Marshall Thundering Herd at Tropicana Field on Dec. 26 for the St. Petersburg Bowl.

The Huskies (6-6, 4-4 AAC) are making their sixth trip to a bowl game in program history and first since the 2011 Fiesta Bowl. UConn had an up-and-down 2015 regular season that ended with a 27-3 loss to Temple a couple weeks ago. The Huskies saw the Owls rack up 27 straight points in the game before Bobby Puyol kicked a field goal late to avoid the shutout. UConn had no answer for Jahad Thomas, who took 20 carries for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Thomas led an Owls rushing attack that went for 169 yards, while the Huskies were held to nine. UConn had a little better success passing the ball with Tim Boyle (12-of-20, 121 yards), but turnovers among other poor decisions kept the Huskies out the end zone all game. UConn is searching for their first bowl win since the 2010 PapaJohns.com Bowl when the Huskies defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks, 20-7.

The Thundering Herd (9-3, 6-2 C-USA) are searching for their fifth straight bowl win and have won nine of their last 10 postseason games. Marshall had a strong 2015 regular season winning seven straight at one point, but fizzled down the stretch losing two of their last three. The Herd’s last game ended in a 49-28 loss to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Marshall spotted WKU the game’s first 21 points before they finally got on the board and that is as close as the game would get as the Hilltoppers ran away with it. The Herd defense was in trouble from the start, allowing stellar performances from Brandon Doughty (27-39, 370 yards, 5 TD), Anthony Wales (24 car, 131 yards, TD) and Tyler Higbee (6 rec, 92 yards, 2 TD). Chase Litton tried to keep the Herd competitive with 230 yards through the air and a pair of touchdowns, but multiple interceptions stalled the Marshall offense and gave WKU more possessions.

The 2015 St. Petersburg Bowl will mark the first meeting between UConn and Marshall. The Herd played a bowl game at Tropicana Field in 2011, when they defeated the FIU Panthers, 20-10, in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl.

    Prediction

Connecticut’s struggles on offense will continue against the speed and experience of the Marshall defense. And while the Thundering Herd will have its own issues moving the chains and scoring points, Litton will occasionally flash why he’s one of the budding young quarterbacks of Conference USA. Marshall will also feed off the venue and the energy from the stands, since more than two dozen players on the roster hail from the Sunshine State.

    Game Notes

    • With a victory, Marshall would become the only Group of 5 school with 10-plus wins in each of the past three seasons and would join the likes of Alabama, Baylor, Clemson, Florida State, Michigan State, Ohio State and Oregon in doing so.
    • The bowl game will be the eighth of Bob Diaco’s coaching career and his first as a head coach.
