Kirby Smart’s debut as the head coach of Georgia was a smashing success, as the Bulldogs took down a tough North Carolina squad in the Georgia Dome. It was made even better by the performance of running back Nick Chubb, who didn’t seem to miss a beat after last year’s knee injury. Freshman quarterback Jacob Eason seemed to fit right into his role as a collegiate player, completing eight passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.

Nicholls State will open its 2016 season with quarterback Tuskani Figaro leading the way after a disappointing season last year that saw the Colonels go 3-8. All-Southland safety B.T. Sanders will look to cause problems in the secondary.

What To Know About UGA

A healthy Chubb, a consistent Eason, and a great performance by the defense means Smart should be happy about his team’s opening win. Smart worked for Nick Saban, though, and therefore will always find room to critique his team. The Bulldogs should be able to get a lot of playing time for some reserves and see what they can do in this one, hoping that some will prove themselves and add depth to the offense and defense.

What to Know About Nicholls State

The Colonels weren’t great last season, but a two-game winning streak to end the season showed some promise for head coach Tim Rebowes. Figaro is a threat to both the pass and run game from the quarterback position, and the return of three of his best four receivers helps add some familiarity to the offense.

Defensively, the Colonels lost only two starters, including Sanders and linebacker Hezekiah White, who racked up a team-leading 96 tackles last season.

Offense: UGA. A healthy Chubb takes this team to a new dynamic on offense.

Defense: UGA. Held a good UNC offense to just 315 yards of total offense.

Special Teams: UGA. Marshall Long is a weapon at punter.

Coaching: UGA. Kirby Smart learned from the best, and is now looking to take those lessons to success at Georgia.

Intangibles: UGA. First home game after a “neutral-site” game in nearby Atlanta will have the Dawgs fans excited.

UGA vs. Nicholls State Prediction

Smart will not let his team rest on its laurels for a game against an undermanned opponent. Chubb will run off for more than 100 yards in the first half, Eason will get more experience, and the backups will come in for the Dawgs in the second half.
