Appalachian State continues to put together intriguing out of conference matchups against Power Five teams.
After the Mountaineers hosted Miami in 2016 and recently announced that a four-game series had been booked with East Carolina, the school announced on Monday that it had come to an agreement with North Carolina for a three-game set. Included in the deal is the Tar Heels’ first-ever visit to Boone, NC.
UNC will host Appalachian State on Sept. 21, 2019 and Sept. 9, 2023, and it will travel to Sun Belt territory in between those two matchups on Sept. 3, 2022. The ’22 visit will be the third time an ACC team will visit Appalachian State in a seven-year span. The Mountaineers will also host in-state Wake Forest on Sept. 23 of this coming season.
“This series is the next addition in bringing Power Five programs to Kidd Brewer Stadium,” Mountaineers AD Doug Gillin said in a statement. “With a record crowd for Miami last year, Wake Forest this season, and North Carolina in 2022 we are continuously looking for opportunities to bring great opponents to The Rock. Our goal is to continue to bring Power Five opponents, when available, and quality Group of Five opponents to Boone, which benefits our students, student-athletes, university and community.
“I truly enjoyed working with the UNC administration in constructing a series that is a win-win. Playing regional and in-state opponents makes a lot of sense for us. We will see an increase in tickets sales both home and away, reduced travel costs and less missed class time for our students. Over the next eight seasons we will be playing the series with UNC, in addition to a four-game series with ECU, and home-and-home series with Wake Forest, Charlotte, and Marshall.”
Last season, then-No. 25 Miami claimed a 45-10 win in front of a record crowd of 34,658 at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The ‘Neers, who are best known for shocking Michigan while they played in the FCS, gave Tennessee a major scare before ultimately faltering in their season opener last fall. Scott Satterfield’s squad finished the year at 10-3, claiming a 31-28 win over Toledo in the Camellia Bowl.
Meanwhile, Larry Fedora’s Tar Heels finished last season at 8-5, dropping a 25-23 decision to Stanford in the Sun Bowl.
