The Utah State Aggies will meet the Akron Zips in Boise on Dec. 22 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The Aggies (6-6, 5-3 MW) are representatives from the Mountain West and are making their 11th bowl appearance in program history. Utah State slid to end its 2015 regular season schedule, losing four of its last six games. Last time out, the Aggies were blown out in a 51-28 non-conference affair by BYU. Utah State took advantage of a quick start and held a 21-10 lead with three minutes left in the first half, but BYU answered in a big way outscoring the Aggies 41-7 the rest of the game. Chuckie Keeton tallied 297 total yards and two touchdowns on the day, but most of his work came in the first half as the Cougars defense neutralized the senior quarterback the rest of the way. Hunter Sharp (7 rec, 100 yards) caught Keeton’s only touchdown pass, while LaJuan Hunt and Nick Vigil each punched in a score for the Aggies. Utah State will appear in its fifth consecutive bowl game and have won its last three in that span.

The Zips (7-5, 5-3 MAC) are appearing in just their second bowl game (first since 2005) and are looking for their first bowl win as an FBS program. In 2015, Akron enjoyed its first seven-win season in 10 years and a regular season that ended in four straight wins, including a 20-0 shutout of Kent State a couple weeks ago. The Zips scored once in each quarter and held the Golden Flashes to 135 total yards of offense, forcing three turnovers. Thomas Woodson completed 11 of his 19 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown, while finishing second on the team in rushing on the day with 84 yards. Connor Hundley, who finished first, had 98 yards on 22 carries and the only other touchdown the Zips scored. The win earned Akron a tie for second place in the MAC East division with the Ohio Bobcats.

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will mark the first ever meeting between Utah State and Akron. The Aggies will be participating in their fourth Idaho Potato Bowl, with the previous three opponents being from the state of Ohio (Cincinnati, Ohio and Toledo).

    Prediction

The Mountain West has dominated the MAC in the last three Potato Bowls, but this one should be a bit of a slugfest. Akron’s defense is too good and too disciplined to let this get out of hand, but the Utah State defense should go back to its old form against a middling Zip attack that won’t go anywhere. Don’t expect any type of a pretty game, but enjoy fantastic linebacker play and a low-scoring battle that should stay close well into the fourth.
