When considering the Utah vs. Utah State spread, the gambling interest isn’t about any sort of rivalry or trap-game. The only term bettors will need to know for Friday night’s game is historical precedence.

Since Utah joined the Pac-12, Kyle Whittingham and the Utes have absolutely dominated non-conference opponents. Last year, for example, Utah outscored its four non-conference foes by a ridiculous margin of 186-61, ringing in an average margin of victory of 31.25. The Utes’ dominance included two drubbings of Mountain West opponents to the aggregate tune of 104-37 and two easy covers.

Looking at this year’s box scores only makes this bet more reassuring. Utah beat a good Michigan team by forcing three turnovers and putting forth a balanced offensive effort. On the other hand, Utah State struggled mightily in its debut versus an inferior opponent.

If the Aggies are going to keep this game close, they’ll have to greatly improve upon their average of 3.3 yards per completion and slightly-better-than 4.0 yards per carry. The Aggies could very well increase output in those areas, but look for them to fall behind early, and force their quarterback, Chuckie Keaton, into several unfavorable passing situations against a very good Utah defense. Couple that edge with Utah running back Devontae Booker, who is looking to put his slow start from Week 1 in the rearview mirror, and the combination is a perfect one for handicappers favoring the Utes.

But as aforementioned, the reason to love Utah at -13 over Utah State is historical precedence. Following are a few stats to consider when contemplating the Utah vs. Utah State spread:

    • Utah is 14-1 against non-conference opponents since the Utes joined the Pac-12.
    • Utah is 12-3 Against The Spread since joining the Pac-12 (2nd highest hit rate in the country vs. non-conference opponents in that time frame).
    • Utah has been hot ATS as of late … 10 for its last 14 ATS.
    • Utah is 4 of its last 6 as home favorites.
