Just minutes away from falling to 0-3, UTEP may have rescued its 2015 season by rallying in the waning moments and beating rival New Mexico State in overtime, 50-47. In their home opener, the Miners have a chance to even their record against 2-1 Incarnate Word of the Southland Conference.
The UTEP defense is in a state of disrepair. It’s one thing to get abused by Arkansas and Texas Tech, but New Mexico State amassed 551 yards on the struggling Miners. The Cardinals want to turn loose dual-threat QB Trent Brittain, who leads the team in pre-sack rushing yards.
In their first game without star RB Aaron Jones, the Miners improbably found an offense. QB Ryan Metz came off the bench to throw three touchdown passes, while Darrin Laufasa and converted S LaQuintus Dowell picked up the slack on the ground. UTEP will keep the momentum going against an FCS D.
In Metz, maybe, just maybe, the Miners have found a young quarterback it can build an offense around. Yeah, just one game, but he showed great poise for a rookie, completing 15-of-19 for 218 yards, three touchdowns and a pick, Now more than ever, the Jones-less Miners need more from the passing game.
UTEP will have few problems building off the momentum forged last weekend in Las Cruces. An offense with new contributors in the backfield will further boost its confidence—and its numbers—at the expense of the Incarnate Word defense.
Final Score: UTEP 51, Incarnate Word, 13, Line: No Line, o/u: No Line
