The Virginia Union Panthers will host the rival Virginia State Trojans on Saturday in the “Battle of I-95.” It’s the final game of the season for both teams.
The Panthers (7-2, 5-1 CIAA) have won five of their last six games following last week’s 43-31 win over Elizabeth City State. The win marked the first time in 15 years that Virginia Union finished a season undefeated at home. It was Hakeem Holland’s day as the running back rushed for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Shawheem Dowdy also rushed for a score and completed 18 of his 25 pass attempts on the afternoon.
The Trojans (6-3, 4-2 CIAA) are riding a two-game winning streak with hopes to extend it to three on senior day. Last time out, Virginia State defeated Chowan, 35-28, behind Trenton Cannon’s go-ahead, 39-yard touchdown strike to Gene Holloman with 2:06 left in the game. In addition to the TD pass, Cannon also led the Trojans in rushing with 106 yards on 13 carries and a rushing touchdown to boot.
Virginia Union and Virginia State will meet Saturday in a rivalry series that dates back to 1902. The Trojans defeated the Panthers 33-12 last season for the CIAA Northern Division crown.
