The No. 1 seeded Virginia Cavaliers will take on the No. 4 seed Iowa State Cyclones Friday in the first regional semifinal in Chicago.

The Cavaliers (28-7) held off the Butler Bulldogs on Saturday to win, 77-69, in Raleigh. After taking a two-point deficit into halftime, the Cavs came out of the gates strong, knocking down 14 of their first 16 shots. Virginia shot 73 percent in the second half and came up with key stops, which allowed them to pull away late. In addition to impressive shooting from the field, the Cavaliers were 17-of-21 from the charity stripe and plus-10 on the glass. 

After a year away, the Cyclones (23-11) are back in the Sweet 16 after defeating Arkansas-Little Rock 78-61 in Denver on Saturday. Iowa State was hot from all over the floor, shooting 56.6 percent from the field and 52.4 percent from long range. The Cyclones also got it done on the defensive end. They held the Trojans to 37 percent shooting and shut down Round of 32 hero Josh Hagins, who had only eight points. 

Virginia and Iowa State will meet up for the fourth time ever on Friday, with the Cyclones holding a 2-1 series edge. The last matchup came back in 2010 as Iowa State downed Virginia 60-47 in Charlottesville.

Prediction

Iowa State can score with the best of them, but they’re running into a brick wall that is Virginia’s defense. The Cavs will learn from their game vs. Butler and control the tempo from the jump, rather than waiting for the second half to do so. Look for Malcolm Brogdon to stifle Georges Niang as Virginia rolls to the Elite Eight.
