Why You Need To Care

Washington hosts Sacramento State, fresh off an emotional loss to Boise State in head coach Chris Petersen’s return to his former school. The Huskies were more competitive than expected, losing by three, but offensive execution could haunt this team throughout 2015. The Hornets opened their season by pummeling NAIA Eastern Oregon, 41-20, at home.

Why Sacramento State Will Win

The Hornets successfully built off last year’s three-game season-ending winning streak with their opening day win. LB Darnell Sankey is one of the top defenders in the FCS, and QB Daniel Kniffin enjoyed a solid debut as the starter. Kniffin won’t need to generate too many points to outscore the feeble U-Dub attack.

Why Washington Will Win

Petersen’s offense could be a yearlong headache. His defense, on the other hand, might exceed expectations. The revamped D played very well against the Broncos, allowing just two touchdowns. DE Joe Mathis, S Budda Baker and LB Azeem Victor were especially active, playing like the next wave of defensive stars in Seattle.

Player Who Matters

Husky QB Jake Browning’s weren’t great, 150 yards and a pick on 20-of-34 passing. But he faced a terrific Bronco D, and his upside and arm talent are evident. The true freshman has a star’s ceiling and an opportunity this weekend to mature in the face of a far more manageable opponent.

What’s Going To Happen?

As U-Dub rebuilds and employs so many kids, the team will be vulnerable to anyone, including Sacramento State. However, the defense is set to overachieve, and physical RB Dwayne Washington will provide more help to Browning this weekend. The Huskies could be challenged for a half, but won’t squander a chance to earn their first win of 2015.
