The Washington Huskies will face off with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in Fort Worth on Dec. 26 in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The Huskies (6-6, 4-5 Pac-12) will be participating in their sixth straight bowl game after knocking off in-state rival Washington State in the Apple Cup to become bowl eligible. After allowing the games first three points, Washington scored 24 unanswered to get out to a big lead. The Huskies would take advantage of late turnovers to score three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and cruise to a 45-10 win. The Huskies are looking for their first postseason win since 2013 when they downed the BYU Cougars 31-16 in the Fight Hunger Bowl.

The Golden Eagles (9-4, 7-1 C-USA) are appearing in their first bowl game since 2011. Southern Miss was on a tear down the stretch in 2015 winning six straight games before losing 45-28 to Western Kentucky in the Conference USA title game. The Eagles held a 28-24 lead midway through the third quarter, but watched it slip away as the Hilltoppers scored three straight touchdowns to close out the game. Ito Smith (15 car, 105 yards, TD) and Jalen Richard (8 rec, 33 yards, TD) carried the load for the Southern Miss offense while Nick Mullens struggled. The quarterback completed half his passes for 181 yards and threw three picks. His only touchdown pass was a 5-yard strike to Michael Thomas, who also played well for the Eagles (6 rec, 90 yards). Southern Miss is 1-2 in their last three bowl games with losses to Middle Tennessee in 2008 and Louisville in 2010 before beating Nevada 24-17 in the 2011 Hawaii Bowl.

The 2015 Heart of Dallas Bowl will mark the first meeting between Washington and Southern Miss in program history.

Prediction

The Huskies are a program on the rise, with a chance to showcase it in Dallas. They’ll flex their defensive muscles, frustrating a Golden Eagle team that’s grown accustomed to facing Conference USA-caliber talent for the better part of the year. On offense, Browning and Gaskin will continue to evolve into reliable playmakers. Gaskin will go on to be the Heart of Dallas Bowl MVP, ripping off 125 yards on the ground and introducing himself to the large swath of the country that’s yet to see him in action.
