Western Michigan vs. Buffalo Game Preview

When: Saturday, Nov. 19 – 3:30 ET
Where: Waldo Stadium, Kalamazoo, Mich.
TV Broadcast: ESPNU

Western Michigan found itself trailing by 14 points in the first quarter last week, putting its perfect season and shot at a major bowl bid in jeopardy. But as they have so many times this season, the Broncos roared back for a 37-21 win over Kent State, keeping their hopes alive to receive the Group of Five’s automatic berth in a New Year’s Six bowl game.

That’s a far cry from where Buffalo currently stands. The Bulls are 2-8 overall and are playing out a third straight losing season. They’ve dropped two in a row and have one of the nation’s worst run defenses, which doesn’t bode well against a Western Michigan team that has a strong ground game.

What To Know About Western Michigan

Quarterback Zach Terrell and potential first-round NFL draft pick Corey Davis form one of the country’s most underrated duos. Terrell has tossed 23 touchdowns to rank second in the MAC and has thrown only one interception. Davis’ 14 TD catches lead the conference and are tied for third in the nation. However, the Broncos went away from that attack last week, showing they can score other ways.

Terrell threw for only 83 yards and Davis had one catch, but Javarion Franklin ran for 134 yards, Fabian Johnson added 125 and Western Michigan finished with four rushing touchdowns, including one from Terrell. Franklin is second in the MAC in rushing and has scored 10 touchdowns to tie for second.

What To Know About Buffalo

Buffalo just doesn’t have enough talent to stop the Broncos. It leads the MAC in fewest passing yards against per game, but that’s a deceiving number considering it also has faced the fewest pass attempts from the opposition. The Bulls rank 123rd in the nation in rush defense allowing an average of 251.2 yards per game and have surrendered 25 rushing touchdowns.

As for the offense? Buffalo ranks 110th in the nation. Redshirt freshman quarterback Tyree Jackson has some dual-threat abilities with five touchdown runs.

Offense: Western Michigan – The Broncos will ride their ground game in this one.

Defense: Western Michigan – It is third in the MAC in total defense, and Keion Adams is tied for second in the conference in tackles for loss.

Special Teams: Western Michigan – Buffalo is tied for 10th in the conference in average yards per punt, which stands out since the Bulls punt so often.

Coaching: Western Michigan – Bigger schools will be coming after P.J. Fleck this offseason.

Intangibles: Buffalo – The Bulls have won the last two meetings.

Matchup To Watch

Franklin vs. Buffalo’s rush defense

Western Michigan won’t completely ignoring its air attack with such a potent duo, but it is going to gain the bulk of its yardage through Franklin. The Bulls won’t be able to stop him.
