Who’ll Win The LSU QB Battle?

Will incumbent Anthony Jennings win Les Miles' vote to be the Tiger starting QB, or will challenger Brandon Harris get the top spot on the depth chart? Campus Insiders' Managing Editor Pete Fiutak joins Ray Crawford to make a case for each candidate and predict who will win.

LSU still doesn’t have its quarterback situation figured out. Everett Golson is a Florida State Seminole and Braxton Miller isn’t leaving Columbus, so the offense is stuck with Brandon Harris and Anthony Jennings – two talented quarterbacks who didn’t light the world on fire last season. They’re both still young and learning, and they each have upside, but this is truly the old adage that if you have two starting quarterbacks, you don’t have one. After finishing 114th in the nation in passing, and 68th in passing efficiency, anything the Tigers want to do offensively will revolve around who’s under center – and if there’s any improvement.

    QB Anthony Jennings, Jr.
Flip a coin on the difference between Jennings and Brandon Harris in terms of who could be the one to lead the offense to more big plays and more consistent drives, but Jennings has more experience. He struggled with his passing, missing on more than half of his passes for 1,611 yards and 11 touchdowns with seven picks, and running for 292 yards with 119 against Texas A&M. At 6-2 and 216 pounds he has good size and came to LSU as a top dual-threat recruit, but he hasn’t done enough to take the job by the horns. His job is to be a distributor more than a playmaker.

    QB Brandon Harris, Soph.
Leonard Fournette was last year’s star recruit, but Harris wasn’t far behind with 6-3, 188-pound size, all-star smarts in the classroom, and enough running ability to be slippery and dangerous. Thrown to the wolves during the first half of the season as a true freshman, he was great at times, completing 11-of-14 passes for 178 yards and three score against New Mexico State with two rushing scores, but struggling the next week against Auburn completing 3-of-14 passes in the loss. Anthony Jennings took over and never gave up the gig. Harris is missing the at bats – with more seasoning and experience, he should be terrific. When will he get it? Jennings is the veteran option, but Harris is the shot for the stars.
