My colleague Jeff Bartl decided to take a few shots at me in his weekly column, Livin’ B1G. Since I have some actual important things to talk about in my weekly SEC Football Vibes (every Thursday!), and I don’t want to waste my time spewing garbage defending myself in my column, I’m just going to ignore the trash talk. I’m taking the high road.
In college football, Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight is out for some time (Jim Harbaugh has refuted the reports of the injury, saying “The report you’re referring to that he’s out for the season, I have not heard that from the doctors, so that’s incorrect” and “we’ll see” regarding his status) after suffering a broken collarbone, Butch Davis is back in the coaching game, and the Florida Gators injury list is extremely lengthy heading into their matchup against LSU. Here are some other newsworthy notes in the latest college football news roundup.
Hurt Husky – Washington suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday against USC, and now they will miss the services of linebacker Azeem Victor, who is expected to miss the rest of the season with a broken leg. Victor led the Huskies in tackles so far this season.
Former Gamecock Now A Coach – Former South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore was set for a career in the NFL, but injuries during his college career set those dreams back. Now, Lattimore has the chance to use the knowledge acquired playing to teach young men, as he has been hired to be the new head coach at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, SC.
“Heathwood Hall is a special community that I am thrilled to be a part of,” Lattimore said in a statement. “The kindhearted people make this place feel like home. The genuine care for our students is evident, and it all starts with great leadership from our Head of School, Chris Hinchey. The sport of football has provided me with a platform to motivate and inspire thousands of kids over the years, and this will give me an opportunity on a daily basis to continue to make an impact on the lives of our young men. Our coaching staff will immediately begin to create a uniform system, developing the program from top to bottom, with the foundation built on an emphasis of accountability. Our young men will know they represent something bigger than themselves. Our players will work with pride to have people respect the name on the back of their jersey and more importantly, the name on the front.”
The Legend of the Mullet – You never know what Oklahoma State Mike Gundy will say during any particular teleconference, so on Monday when asked about his mullet, Gundy did not disappoint. He explained that he made a deal with his son that if the young man received a 91 or above on a math test, Gundy would consider cutting it. Unfortunately, the son only received an 88. The Mullet lives!
